On July 20, 2019 I will compete in the YMCA of Southern Maine's Peaks to Portland Swim for my 7th year. The Peaks to Portland swim is one of the oldest open water swims in the United States and is 2.4 miles. Having grown up in southern Maine on the ocean I feel a strong affinity to compete in this particular race and give back in some small way.
However, this year my motivation to swim is decidedly different. Last summer, my oldest son Aaron who was 15 at the time, had the extraordinary experience of saving a man's life in the ocean. This experience had a profound impact. I will forever be in awe of Aaron's courage and absolute selflessness. I will swim to honor Aaron's bravery and his ability, as well as the life of the 37 year old man he saved. I will swim because I can and in hopes that every person/child learns this fundamental skill. In raising money through Peaks to Portland I am supporting the YMCA's efforts for children to experience life changing programs that include the essential component of swimming lessons.
Please support me in this small effort that feels near and dear to my heart. I look forward with enthusiasm to swim from Peaks Island to downtown Portland and am beyond grateful for my swimming ability. Your support will help me to ensure that kids in southern Maine are equipped for the water.
With much gratitude & love-Steph
