I’m excited to swim in the YMCA of Southern Maine’s Peaks to Portland Swim to Benefit Kids **on hot day in July of my choosing because the race is "virtual" this year** with my dad kayaking beside me (thanks, Jeff!).
I made this commitment back in January and the world has changed a lot since then! I thought I'd be heading to the Y a few times a week to swim and then transition to open water swims this summer. Instead, I switched to open water swimming much earlier than I had planned which as included swimming in a pond.
In addition to swimming, I’m raising money in support of children at the Y. All funds raised will help the Y deliver life-changing programs that inspire young potential, promote academic success, prevent drowning, and help build healthy, confident children.
Many of you know that much of my career has been dedicated to access and inclusion work. I often look to the Y to see how they do this work and look up to the incredible scale of their initiatives. Last year, the Y gave financial assistance to 10,387 youth, individuals, and families to ensure full community access to their programs. My home Y offers English language classes with free childcare, women's only swim times, and often serves an overflow shelter for New Mainers families. It's an incredible place.
